The Red Cloud Renewable Energy Training Center, which opened in 2008, offers 6 to 8 training sessions annually. Classes range from 3 to 40 students, a majority of them arriving right out of high school. Many become certified solar technicians and then go to reservations to work for their tribes. When Dr. Laura Stachel went to Nigeria in 2008, she witnessed deplorable hospital conditions, including electric outages that harmed maternity and surgical care. Laura and her husband, Hal Aronson, a solar energy educator in Berkeley, California, founded WE CARE Solar to improve healthcare in regions without reliable electricity.
